Reality is Personal
While visiting my dad at his wonderful Alzheimer's group home, I noticed a resident in her late 80s pacing about with a distressed look on her face. A well-meaning aide approached her and gently tried to redirect her behavior. The resident protested, saying that she was looking for her mother who was supposed to meet her. In the most caring of tones, the aide replied, "Sweetie, you know that your mom can't come to meet you. She passed away many years ago." Whereupon the little girl in the body of this elderly patient collapsed in tears, crying "Mommy, Mommy...." Comments (7) |
