“I don’t eat much, really.” Really? If you’re struggling with your weight and aren’t sure why you keep gaining or why you're not losing, maybe you suffer from calorie amnesia. This is an easily curable illness that comes from not giving adequate attention to what you’re eating and drinking. In our busy culture, this is a common illness. But there is a cure. Calorie amnesia sufferers often: rush through their days; eat on the run; nibble at their desks, while cooking, and whenever else the opportunity arises; clean up left-overs to prevent waste; sneak little treats from the cookie jar or pantry; and drink calorie-laden beverages. With controversy brewing, regular and diet sodas alike are coming under fire. Regular sodas, sometimes called liquid candy, are famous for contributing empty calories to our diets. Recently banned from many schools, regular sodas have been linked with obesity, increased risk for heart disease and tooth decay. And research has even linked an intake of diet soda with obesity and most recently with increased risk for heart disease. While more research is needed, many people are looking for alternatives. Izze Sparkling Juice is a natural blend of pure fruit juice and sparkling water, with no caffeine, refined sugars or artificial ingredients, per the manufacturer. The approximate calorie content for a 12-ounce bottle is 135 calories. They also have a lower-calorie version called Izze Esque with about 60 calories per 12 ounces. Remember, moderation is still important. Comments (2) |

I recently rediscovered a tortilla chip brand that I had first enjoyed many years ago, but had disappeared from my grocer’s shelves. It’s called Guiltless Gourmet. Just the name alone drew me to brand when I first saw it. “Now that’s what eating should be about,” I thought – enjoying gourmet food without guilt! Guiltless Gourmet baked tortilla chips offer the tortilla chip fan a chip that is low in fat but high in flavor and whole grain goodness. The two varieties I purchased were baked blue corn chips and baked chili lime chips. Both were full of crunch and rich whole-grain flavor, and contained only 2 grams of fat (0 saturated or trans) and provided 2 grams of fiber per serving. Most tortilla chips contain at least 8 grams of fat per serving and 1 or less grams of fiber. Comments (1) |
