ImageDid you know that cherries are believed to be one of the most concentrated sources of melatonin? Melatonin is an antioxidant in the body that helps improve the body’s biorhythm and natural sleep patterns. Melatonin is called the “hormone of darkness” because the secretion of melatonin is inhibited by light and permitted by darkness. It plays a role in helping to regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycles.

Last month, at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Expo and Conference, I picked up some interesting information by the Cherry Marketing Institute that explains the important relationship between cherries and sleep.

Afternoon in an Apple Orchard Print E-mail

ImageYesterday and today couldn’t have been more beautiful to hang out in an apple orchard. Let me explain. My husband and I had traveled to a dear friend's farm near Gettysburg, Pa., to celebrate his 50th birthday. Their festive fall barn party was a great celebration with delicious food, family, friends and fun at their historic home and apple orchard. Thanks, Jonathan and Suzanne!

Today, we gathered our baskets and apple-picking tools and headed out to pluck some apples from their trees. The sweet aroma of ripe apples filled the air. We enjoyed an invigorating walk and picked two baskets full of delicious apples.

ImageThis week the weather has turned chilly in mountain Maryland. It’s time for relaxing by a crackling fire and sipping soothing hot tea. My favorite right now is Stash’s chai green tea. But with so many choices on my grocery store’s shelves, it’s fun to try new varieties.
