When I was in New Orleans in 2003, I attended an afternoon cooking class at the New Orleans School of Cooking (which is still in operation, for those planning a trip to the Big Easy). The class consisted of a very entertaining few hours of historical background on the area combined with demonstrations of some of the recipes that make New Orleans famous throughout the world: jambalaya, seafood bisque, pralines, and bread pudding. Motivation, that elusive concept for so many of us…It’s easy to start a diet or exercise program with vim, vigor, and a winning attitude, but as the days go by it can be tough to keep the momentum going. When losing weight at a sensible pace (and for some of us, that means ‘slow’), it can be hard to feel like you’re making any progress. I see advertisements proclaiming a loss of 15 or 20 pounds in a month, and while I know that this is unhealthy and/or impossible, it still strikes a chord of envy in me – why can’t I lose weight that quickly?

The day of reckoning is here. Back on July 17, I set a goal to lose five pounds by August 17. Five pounds in one month – a sensible goal, I thought. Well, I weighed myself on the 17th, and my total weight loss for the past month was three pounds. Not horrible, but not great either, since I didn’t meet my goal. But I’ve chosen to focus on the “glass half-full” side of the story: I’m three pounds lighter than I was one month ago! Comments (5) |
