…but apparently you can be too thin, to paraphrase an old saying. I was encouraged a few days ago when I read the story about the reigning Miss England, 20-year-old Georgia Horsley. The 5’8” pageant queen weighs 126 pounds (57 kg.), which makes her slender but not shockingly thin. Comments (11) |

Fiber -- we've all heard of it, and according to health experts, we're not getting enough of it. The average American falls short of consuming the daily recommended fiber intake of 25 to 30 grams. Do you ever look down at your empty plate and not even remember eating? As my co-blogger, registered dietician Theresa Stahl, notes, that's an example of how many us are not 'mindful eaters.' With our hectic lifestyles, we often rush through meals without really tasting or enjoying our food, which may be a frozen or boxed 'convenience food.' And how often do we eat dinner in front of the television instead of sitting down at the table? Probably more often than we want to admit. I recently read an article about the 'slow food' movement, which has been gaining a lot of exposure recently. The slow food philosophy revolves around choosing locally grown and produced items, preparing meals in traditional ways, and dining with friends and family. In other words, it's the opposite of the fast-food lifestyle than many of us follow. Comments (11) |
