Super Bowl: Two Million Pizzas, 11 Million Pounds of Chips, 1,200 CaloriesThere are amazing statistics, and then there are Super Bowl statistics-and those are just as amazing. People throughout Football Nation will gather around their TV sets Feb. 5 to see the Seattle Seahawks battle the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Mother of All World Championship Football Games, the Super Bowl.

The event is so significant that even the name of the day-Super Bowl Sunday-rings with a certain reverence. And just think of all the pizza, snacks, dips and hors d'oeuvres ravenous people will down during the four-hour spectacle, not counting the "after Super Bowl" festivities that usually last well into the wee hours of the morning.

Nutritionists cringe when they think that Super Bowl Sunday is probably the worst day of the year as far as eating healthy goes. Like the Indianapolis Star put it, Super Bowl parties are usually indulgent, but folks can, for nutrition's sake, serve low-fat or light cheeses, dips and dressings, baked chips and crackers, and diet drinks. (The Indianapolis Colts were thrashed by the Steelers in the playoffs en route to the big game.)

To give folks something to chew on between now and the epic battle in Detroit, the Seattle Times has come up with a list of "Super Bowl food stats," such as:

Pounds of potato chips consumed on Super Bowl Sunday = 11 million

Pounds of tortilla chips = 8.2 million

Pounds of popcorn = 3.8 million

Average number of people attending a Super Bowl party = 18

Percentage increase in sales of frozen breaded mushrooms prior to the Super Bowl = 36 percent

kealthTrakPercentage increase in sales of frozen shrimp = 29 percent

Amount of money spent on soft drinks at grocery stores during the entire Super Bowl week = $237.2 million

Calories consumed by the average Super Bowl watcher = 1,200

Amount of time needed to burn off those 1,200 calories = four hours, walking; an hour and 45 minutes, running

Percentage increase in sales of proceed-cheese loaves the week before last year's Super Bowl = 30 percent

Increase in sales of flavored snack crackers = 68 percent

Number of pizzas Pizza Hut expects to prepare on Super Bowl Sunday  = 2 million

Top Super Bowl seller at grocery stores = what else? Frozen pizza

Additional sales of beer = $11.8 million

Pounds of snack food Americans gobble down on Super Bowl Sunday = 30.4 million, twice the average daily amount

So be prepared for the onslaught of snacks and calories-and don't say we didn't warn you!
