For the past few years, I've volunteered for an organization that teaches cooking and basic nutrition to low-income groups. Sometimes these groups are teenagers in after-school programs sponsored by community centers or housing projects. Other times they're adults - usually women - who've been directed to our classes by the Department of Social Services.

In the most recent class, the participants were adults in an English-as-a-second language program sponsored by a community center.

These students - again, almost all women - were recent immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. They were different from the women in my other adult classes in a couple of ways.
