Healthy Holiday EatingNutrition Notes By Theresa Stahl, RD, LDN

Are you wondering how to enjoy the holidays and still maintain a healthy diet? You'll be glad to know that even traditional holiday treats can fit into a healthy eating plan. The key is moderation and balance.

Tips for healthy holiday eating include:

•  Eat mindfully. Focus on truly enjoying your food and you will be more likely to be satisfied with less.

•  Keep portion sizes small. Often, a taste is all you need to satisfy a craving. Most of the enjoyment comes in the first few bites.

•  Eat a healthy snack right before a party. You will be less likely to overeat if you don't arrive overly hungry.

•  Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to quench thirst instead of trying to meet fluid needs with higher calorie holiday beverages.

•  Drink alcohol moderately. Moderate drinking is defined as one drink for a woman and two for a man.  One drink equals one 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine, 10 ounces of wine cooler, or 1-1/2  oz. of distilled liquor (80 proof whiskey, scotch, rum or vodka).

•  Decrease the fat and sugar in your traditional holiday recipes.

•  Find new healthy recipes to start new traditions.

•  Eat smaller meals so you can enjoy holiday treats.

This holiday season, remember moderation and balance can help you enjoy your favorite foods and still feel great!
