Red, White and Blue Firecracker BurgersMichaela Rosenthal’s creation for Nubella’s Fourth of July recipe contest sums up the holiday: the colors of the American flag, firecrackers and burgers.

The resident of Woodland Hills, Calif., won a Mr. Bar B Q 18-piece stainless-steel set, perfect for her Red, White and Blue Firecracker Burgers, a recipe with a bang!

Michaela’s creation was one of nearly 40 recipes we received from throughout the country – Delaware to California, men and women – in our Independence Day contest. We have some good cooks out there who enjoy a good, healthy barbecue with all the fixings.

Thanks to all who responded! Check back here soon for more contests.

A family of cooks

In the past three years, Michaela has won more than two dozen recipe contests. She says cooking comes easy to her, considering that her mother was "the original health food nut" - Michaela never tasted a soda until she was 20 - but taught her everything she knows about cooking.

"I have always had to be creative in meal planning as my husband has food allergies, my son is picky, and my daughter is a vegetarian," she says. "I like to create meals that will please all appetites.

"Summer cooking is my favorite. For my fourth of July cuisine creations, I like to play with the flavors of the season. Living in California, I am blessed with wonderful produce and love to create healthy meals just as my mother did when I was growing up."

Burgers and beauties, salad and skewers

In addition to Michaela’s Red, White & Blue Firecracker Burgers, Janet Yu of San Diego, California, is the first runner-up for her Summer Fruit and Shrimp Skewers. (A note: no, we’re not biased toward California. Our company is based in Jersey City, N.J., and Nubella operates out of Dallas.)

Second runner-up is Catherine Wilkinson of Dewey, Arizona, for her American Beauties.

Sally Sibthorpe of Shelby Township, Mich., is the third runner-up for her Thai Crunch Chicken Salad.

We also have plenty of tasty honorable mentions, ranging from baked beans to zucchini casserole.
