Back In The Habit
Page 2

I’ve been working out at a gym for over ten years now. But don’t be too impressed – because my routine never lasts. At times I’m really into it, exercising on a regular basis. But then out of nowhere, I stop. And it may be months before I go back. I know that I’m happier when I’m working out. I feel better, I look better and honestly, it just feels good to start sentences with “This morning at the gym….”

Trick or Treat?

A couple of months ago, I was on another hiatus from the gym – and I was angry at myself. Very angry. So I decided to splurge and treat myself to a personal training package. Thinking back now, “treat” is quite a comical word to use here. When you’re on your 88th push-up (okay, that’s an exaggeration) and your trainer is yelling at you to keep your head down, your stomach in, and your spirits up – it doesn’t feel much like a treat. But after each session was over, I emerged through the gym doors happy, rejuvenated and darn proud of what I’d just achieved.

My 10-session package ended a couple of weeks ago and I was truly sad to see it end. There was something so easy about knowing I “had” to make my appointment. And during my session, I was always told exactly what to do, how to do it, and when to stop (despite my beliefs that I honestly didn’t have one more in me). I was pushed to my limit, and loved/hated every second of it.

She’s Got Class

So what’s a girl to do now? A girl who sees a positive difference in her body, but also wants to see the remaining flab turn to tone – and tone turn to muscle. What’s she to do when she has rent to pay, food to eat – and just can’t bring herself to sign up for another very expensive personal training package? She grabs a class schedule from the gym’s front desk and plasters it to her refrigerator door. And she jumps full force into Spin, Total Body Conditioning, Yoga, Club Strength and Skydiving (I was kidding with that last one.)

I joke that I am “sticking it to the man” because I am getting the next best thing to a trainer – without paying a penny more than my monthly gym membership. So I welcome you to join me as I embark on the road to a better, fitter me – with the help of some enthusiastic instructors who don’t yet know the difference they’ll make in my life.

It's so hard getting back in, isn't it? Good for you for starting up your routine again.
