Page 1 of 2 Have you tried Marcona almonds? On Rachael Ray’s recommendation, I purchased Marcona almonds and have found them to be a wonderful treat! Marcona almonds originated in Spain and are rounder, sweeter and more delicate in texture than other almonds. They are tender, flavorful and satisfying. Although they’re pricey, about $15 per pound, a little can go a long way.
In general, almonds are nutrition powerhouses. They contain more calcium than other nuts and have the highest dietary fiber content of any nut or seed, providing about 3 grams of fiber per ounce. One ounce of Marcona almonds, about 20 nuts, contains approximately 160 calories. Almonds also contain protein, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. They’re high in monounsaturated fats, which help decrease heart disease risk by lowering the levels of unhealthy LDL cholesterol. They contain antioxidants and phytochemicals that also help to reduce risk for heart disease as well as cancer. Because Marcona almonds are so rich and flavorful, they are great chopped into a salad of greens, along with a cheese such as blue or goat cheese. Both a small amount of cheese and a small amount of nuts can go a long way to add interest to a simple salad tossed with a basic vinaigrette.
