Sugar and Caffeine and Fizz, Oh My! Print E-mail

ImageA friend recently emailed me a cartoon that shows a Pepsi employee in his boss’s office, hanging his head in shame as the boss informs him, “You tested positive for Coke.” I found this very funny, not only because of the ongoing Pepsi vs. Coke debate, but also because I ‘test positive’ for Coke on a daily basis.

I’m addicted to the sugary beverage! I don’t drink coffee, so it gives me a daily caffeinated jump-start, plus I enjoy the taste. A cold, icy Coke, sometimes with an added shot of cherry syrup…heaven on earth!

How do I love Coke? Let me count the ways…
I could probably go on and on about my love of the bubbly drink, but in reality, I know that it doesn’t love me back. I don’t drink diet soda (the artificial sweeteners trigger migraine headaches) so my soft drinks are loaded with sugar and approximately 140 calories in a 12-ounce serving. Not exactly helpful in my quest to lose a few pounds. And there are more reasons to skip the fizzy beverages  – check out 10 Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda.

As I struggle to manage my weight, it doesn’t make sense to spend up to 200 calories each day on the ‘empty calories’ of soda. While I can’t promise that I’ll give up my habit completely, I am trying to cut down.

If there are any other ‘addicts’ out there, I’d love some tips on how you reduced your soda intake!

Girl, I'm an addict too--but I drink Diet Coke. It's not necessarily the best thing for you, but it's 0 calories, and the new Diet Coke Plus supposedly has a bunch of nutrients in it. If Diet Coke tastes gross to you (it did to me at first), just keep drinking it, and in a week, you'll like it better than regular Coke, believe me. Crystal Light is also a yummy low-cal drink. :)

I'm right there with you, HealthyGurl. Cystal Light is like my best friend. And now there's a lot of drinks coming out that are made with Splenda. Makes me feel better about what I'm putting into my body.
