A Better Soda? Print E-mail

With controversy brewing, regular and diet sodas alike are coming under fire. Regular sodas, sometimes called liquid candy, are famous for contributing empty calories to our diets. Recently banned from many schools, regular sodas have been linked with obesity, increased risk for heart disease and tooth decay. And research has even linked an intake of diet soda with obesity and most recently with increased risk for heart disease. While more research is needed, many people are looking for alternatives.

Izze Sparkling Juice is a natural blend of pure fruit juice and sparkling water, with no caffeine, refined sugars or artificial ingredients, per the manufacturer. The approximate calorie content for a 12-ounce bottle is 135 calories. They also have a lower-calorie version called Izze Esque with about 60 calories per 12 ounces. Remember, moderation is still important.

But does Izze pass the taste test? I tried the 12-ounce bottle of blueberry (bought at a specialty food store) and the 8.4-ounce can of sparkling blackberry (bought at Target). They were both refreshing and delicious! My family liked them as well.

While I believe we should drink mostly water every day, Izze Sparkling Juice hits the spot when a carbonated beverage is desired and adds to our fruit intake.

Also, try making your own sparkling fruit spritzer by mixing ¼ cup of your favorite 100% fruit juice with ice and seltzer water. Cheers!

Diet Sodas?
Even though I try to eat a healthful diet and I exercise regularly, I am not naturally a very energetic person. I often get a mid-afternoon slump, and I have recently been relying on diet sodas to give me a pick-me-up.

After reading Theresa's comments about the possible connection between diet sodas and obesity, I have decided to give them up. I am not, however, ready to completely swear off caffeine.

I just started drinking a premium Chinese tea called Wu Long tea which is purported to have twice as much fat burning potential as green tea. It is pleasant tasting, even without sweetener, and it gives me a little caffeine without the unwanted side effects of diet soda.

From what I have read, premium Wu Long tea also may boost the immune system and help create a radiant complexion.

I hope that, over the long run, Wu Long tea will help me lose a few pounds and prove a suitable substitute for diet sodas. Thanks, Theresa, for the information.

Diet Sodas?
Thanks for sharing this great soda alternative. I think Izze is great. I often drink Crystal Geyser or Calistoga sparkling water flavored with lemon or lime as a great non-soda alternative as well.
