“I don’t eat much, really.” Really? If you’re struggling with your weight and aren’t sure why you keep gaining or why you're not losing, maybe you suffer from calorie amnesia. This is an easily curable illness that comes from not giving adequate attention to what you’re eating and drinking. In our busy culture, this is a common illness. But there is a cure. Calorie amnesia sufferers often: rush through their days; eat on the run; nibble at their desks, while cooking, and whenever else the opportunity arises; clean up left-overs to prevent waste; sneak little treats from the cookie jar or pantry; and drink calorie-laden beverages.
So, if you have the illness, what’s the cure? Keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat and drink from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed. Include the time you eat, how much you eat, and what you are doing while you eat. Yes, it will take some time, but keep a notebook handy and get writing. It’s worth it. You’re worth it! Keeping a food diary has been found to be a powerful tool for long-term weight control success. It’s the only real way to overcome calorie amnesia. And you will learn a lot about your eating habits in the process. Coming up: I’ve kept the food diary, now what?
