Knowledge is power, so they say. And to evaluate your diet, knowing what you’re eating is the necessary first step. Everyone can benefit from keeping a food diary every now and then. It’s good to give yourself a nutrition check-up to evaluate how well you’re meeting your calorie and nutrient needs. And believe me, if you don’t write it down as the day goes along, it will be tough to remember it all by day’s end. It’s not that your memory’s so bad, it’s because each day is chock-full of so many activities that we rarely focus entirely on everything we’re eating. This is, after all, part of the problem. Writing it down forces us to focus on it. You can analyze your diet at the USDA’s food pyramid website, www.mypyramid.gov. This site allows you to calculate your daily calorie needs and then evaluate your intake based on your specific calorie and nutrient needs. It also gives you easy-to-read reports, including how well your daily intake measures up according to your individualized food pyramid and the dietary guidelines for Americans. Have you kept food diaries in the past? Please share your successes and challenges and things you’ve learned along the way.
