My Special 20th Anniversary issue of Cooking Light magazine arrived recently and one article in particular caught my attention. It’s the "Happy Birthday, Cooking Light" article that reflects on some of the milestones and historical news highlights from the past 20 years.

Wow! Twenty years ago, I was a relatively new dietitian and thrilled to have the opportunity to subscribe to a magazine that focused on eating smart, being fit and living well. I was hooked and have been a faithful reader ever since. And Nubella.com has that same great focus online, in a free weekly e-newsletter, and healthy blog network!

I thought you would enjoy some of the news highlights listed from the past 20 years.

1991 – Salsa sales surpass ketchup by $40 million.
1992 – The USDA introduces the Food Pyramid to guide Americans’ food choices.
1993 – The Food Network begins, reflecting America’s increased interest in food.
1996 – The trend for indoor grilling takes off with the introduction of the George
            Foreman grill.
2003 – Bottled water becomes the second most popular commercial beverage in
America, according to the Beverage Marketing Association.
2005 – The Food Pyramid is replaced by MyPyramid, which offers customized food
guidance based on specifics like weight, gender, and age via the web
            MyPyramid.gov.
2007 – The Eat Five a Day program becomes Fruits and Veggies–More Matters with
            information available at www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov

It’s interesting to review these food and nutrition news highlights. How have these affected your eating habits over the years?
