What's In A Number? Print E-mail

As I hopped on the scale at my Weight Watchers meeting earlier this week, I was all smiles. Because of the Labor Day holiday, it had been two weeks since my last weigh-in. I was more than ready for the good news about how much weight I'd lost. But moments later, the woman behind the table exclaimed, "Down another pound. Good job!"

"That's it?!" I blurted out in surprise (and a little bit of disgust, too) How could this be possible? For the past two weeks, I'd been monitoring everything I ate, and even more, I'd taken my workout to the next level. As cliché as it may sound, I'd never felt better. So why just one lousy pound?

My meeting leader then proceeded to tell me what I've heard a thousand times before. Muscle weighs more than fat blah blah blah. But you know what? She really is right. So am I going to scale down my workouts simply for the purpose of weighing a pound or two less? That would be utterly ridiculous. Instead, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing because I know that regular exercise is doing worlds for my health, and no scale is ever going to fool me into thinking otherwise.

It may seem a bit hypocritical for me to continue to go to Weight Watchers meetings because when you break down the name, it's all about micro-managing that number on the scale. But the truth is, I think that Weight Watchers is a phenomenal program that has helped change many lives for the better. If I needed to lose a great deal of weight, it would make more sense for me to focus on the numbers. But for someone who just wants to curb her appetite, reduce her cravings, and increase her fitness level, what the scale says isn't nearly as important. For now, I will look toward Weight Watchers as a great way to hold me accountable for my diet and exercise habits—and will focus on the fact that, man, I feel good!

I know, sometimes you think you have lost 2-3 lbs or more when you are so strict and when you see one lbs. you think 'come on!' :cry

The overall picture is how you feel, how you look in your clothes and so what if the scale doesn't say what you think it should say, you are still a winner! :grin

I agree, Darlene. You'll drive yourself crazy if you watch the scale.

Just keep doing what you're doing by eating well and exercising. You've definitely got the right idea.
