I went to my 30-year high school reunion this past weekend. Many in my small graduating class were in school together since first grade and we affectionately decided it was more like a family reunion than a class reunion. About 60 miles away from our small Maryland school, we met in a beautiful West Virginia state park for a reunion weekend in rustic log cabins. The center of activity was a large campfire ring. Soon after I arrived on Saturday, a group of us took off on a mountain hike. The trails were rocky and steep at the beginning and a few of us, including three children ages 10, 8, and 6, wondered how long this trail would continue ascending. Finally, we reached a plateau and began winding around the lush mountain.
We discovered lots of natural delights along the way as we enjoyed catching up with one another’s life stories. Not to mention that we got some great exercise in the process, too. Although the trail seemed longer than anticipated, the two-hour hike was well worth it! Back at camp, it was dinnertime and there was an abundance of great food. In addition to traditional picnic fare, there were some exotic dishes as well. I plan to share the recipe for one of my favorites – a West African peanut soup. Old friends, good food and a rigorous mountain climb – now that’s a healthy balance!
