Page 1 of 2 I just have to weigh in (no pun intended) on the massive wave of publicity surrounding Britney Spears’ performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last week. For those who missed the program and/or subsequent story, the much-written about Ms. Spears was scheduled to make her comeback by opening the show by performing her new single, “Gimme More.” To say that the performance was a train wreck is an understatement…Spears appeared glassy-eyed and out of it, and didn’t even lip-sync to her own song very well. So I have no problem with people making comments regarding her uninspired performance.
What I do take issue with is how she was blasted for being fat. Fat?? According the Centers for Disease Control’s 2002 study, the average American woman is about 5’4” and 163 lbs., which is probably a size 12 or larger. So I think most women would love to have Britney’s figure! Sure, she probably should have chosen a better outfit; few of us would look great in the black sequined bikini-style costume she wore. And she could do with a few crunches to tone up her mid-section, but the woman has given birth to two kids, so it’s not unreasonable to think that her stomach may never be as flat as it used to be. So make all the comments you want about Spears’ poor showing at the VMAs; I won’t disagree with you. Just don’t call her fat.
