Afternoon in an Apple Orchard
Page 2

ImageYesterday and today couldn’t have been more beautiful to hang out in an apple orchard. Let me explain. My husband and I had traveled to a dear friend's farm near Gettysburg, Pa., to celebrate his 50th birthday. Their festive fall barn party was a great celebration with delicious food, family, friends and fun at their historic home and apple orchard. Thanks, Jonathan and Suzanne!

Today, we gathered our baskets and apple-picking tools and headed out to pluck some apples from their trees. The sweet aroma of ripe apples filled the air. We enjoyed an invigorating walk and picked two baskets full of delicious apples.

ImageWe’ve all heard the expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” There’s really a lot of truth to this as evidenced by research studies that have highlighted the numerous health benefits of apples. One medium apple has only about 60-80 calories with about three grams of fiber and no fat at all. They’re one of those foods that help to fill you up while delivering few calories. They contain valuable phytochemicals that have been associated with a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease and may help us fight infections.

There were lots of happy children and adults enjoying picking apples today. It’s a great way to get some fresh fall air, exercise and awesome fruit. To find an orchard in your area where you can pick your own apples, visit www.pickyourown.org/applepicking.htm

An apple a day
I've been a doctor for almost 50 years. I am aghast at how medicine has changed. When I started out in Medicine, you went to the doctor with symptoms because you were sick Now we have most of the adult population going to doctors with risk factors but no symptoms. They get pills and then they get symptoms (side effects). After many years and many pills, then they get sick with the very problems the pills were supposed to prevent. I was headed in that direction until I turned 40. Since then I have been eating much healthier. I have eaten an apple a day for the last 30 years. My motto: "An apple a day bugs the AMA". Besides the fiber, don't forget to mention the potassium which helps keep your blood pressure down. I like the small, crisp Gala or Fuji apples the best. There are many varieties of apples at most any supermarket, so try them all.

Congratulations on turning your life around and for the positive influence you have on your patients!

We picked galas that day in the orchard and really like them too.
