Did you know that cherries are believed to be one of the most concentrated sources of melatonin? Melatonin is an antioxidant in the body that helps improve the body’s biorhythm and natural sleep patterns. Melatonin is called the “hormone of darkness” because the secretion of melatonin is inhibited by light and permitted by darkness. It plays a role in helping to regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycles.
Last month, at the American Dietetic Association's Food and Nutrition Expo and Conference, I picked up some interesting information by the Cherry Marketing Institute that explains the important relationship between cherries and sleep.
Eating cherries may boost your body’s melatonin levels to promote sleep and help minimize the effects of jet lag. In addition, melatonin may also have a role in slowing down the effects of aging. Russel J. Reiter, PhD, a nutrition researcher at the University of Texas Health and Science Center and one of the world’s leading authorities on melatonin, recommends eating dried cherries one hour before your desired sleep time on the plane. After arrival, he recommends consuming cherries one hour before desired sleep each night for at least three consecutive evenings. Interesting indeed! Does anyone have personal experience with this? Please let me know.
