Christmas and New Years are still a few weeks away, yet I am already receiving presents.  Unwanted holiday pounds!

They are certainly not on my holiday wish list, I can not re-gift them and they are definitely the gift that never stops giving.

I have been so good this year, but holiday weight gain has struck again! I am actually afraid to step on the scale, but I see and feel myself carrying those presents around!

Do you realize that the average male gains 8 pounds over the holidays?  I am right about there, and 3 weeks still remain in the season.

What makes it even worse is the 15 pounds I needed to lose, has now jumped to 23!  How and why does this happen??

I have been going out to holiday parties in the evenings, promising myself not to eat things that are bad for me and limiting myself to just a few drinks.  I now find out that the average alcoholic drink contains 150 - 200 calories per glass!  Does this mean that having just 2-3 drinks is the caloric equivalent of an entire meal?

So what do I do, just become a grinch and lock myself in the house for the next 3 weeks?  And do the same thing each and every year between Halloween and New Years?

I know what you mean! Even light beer has a lot of calories in it!

I don't know what type of alcoholic drinks you like best, but if you drink whiskey or something on the rocks, instead of mixing it with juice or soda, you could save about 100 calories each drink!

Hope that helps!

Muffin boy is back! Yes--my advice is to lock yourself in the house, or maybe just put a lock on the fridge :grin . Failing that, there are tons of lower-fat recipes on this site that help you to enjoy the holidays without the weight gain.

VB's tips are sound advice. In addition, to avoid overindulging at parties, carry your keys or a glass of water in your hand. It sounds strange, but it really works.

And keep in mind that you don't have to swear off holiday goods completely. Try the Lowfat Eggnog http://www.nubella.com/component/option,com_recipes/Itemid,94/task,detail/rid,122/s,1/r,eggnog/

If you like dessert, the Lowfat Pumpkin pie http://www.nubella.com/component/option,com_recipes/Itemid,94/task,detail/rid,1342/s,1/r,pumpkin%20pie/
or the Lower Fat Cranberry Gingerbread
http://www.nubella.com/component/option,com_recipes/Itemid,94/task,detail/rid,1276/s,1/r,gingerbread/
are good options.

Nothing you can do about it. The average American gains seven pounds between Turkey Day and New Year's. I have decided to accept it and try to clean up my act in '08.

Eat-Drink and be MERRY...!
Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the unwanted 'presents,' but there are definitely ways to survive the holiday season (and the inevitable drinking and eating that come along with it) without locking yourself up and being a grinch ;)

Not to be captain obvious here, but have you considered exercising? You can easily balance your extra intake by hitting the gym. And as far as booze is concerned, hard, CLEAR liquor mixed with 0 calorie tonic, soda or juice is the way to go.

And then there's FOOD. A little moderation goes a long way! If you know you're going to be tempted to have an extra (or 2...or 3) cookies, just taper back your lunch.

I hope you don't get anymore UNWANTED presents :)

Good luck!

Just enjoy the hollydays, a happy person is healthier than an unhappy one. A little advice is to do excercise and watch out the portions of your meal, it's not bad to eat one cookie but it's bad for your weight to eat 4 or 5. Also eat turkey (without gravy) with salad (use a non-fat dresing) and try to don't drink too much alcohol. It works for me.

The fact that you are so aware of your eating habits and weight gain means that you are SO close to taking control of it. I predict that 2008 will be YOUR YEAR to get in the best shape of your life!

You seem to be a very extreme person. Either living really really unhealthily or really really healthily. Try to find a middle ground this year and just focus on the moderate.
