ImageToday I went to a holiday luncheon meeting. It was a potluck and everyone brought some sort of very yummy dish. There were lots of sweet treats as well. It was a truly delicious lunch and I loved trying everyone’s favorite recipes.

But guess what? As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t eat everything there.

I’ve learned that my eyes are usually bigger than my stomach and so I don’t attempt to load my plate with a little bit of everything. Instead, I take a little of I want to try most. Then, if I have room, I go back for more.

I eat slowly, remembering that it takes about twenty minutes for my brain to register what I’ve eaten before I feel full. Since this was a luncheon meeting, we were going to be there for a while, so there wasn’t any reason to hurry. Allowing myself to sense my fullness helps prevent overeating.

When I have no more room, I’m finished. That’s it. More than that and I’m feeling too full, which translates into stuffed or maybe even sick, which translates into unwanted weight gain. I took some treats with me for snacking on later. That’s one thing with eating, there’s always another opportunity. No reason to get it all in right now. Savor small amounts in the here and now.

And when there’s no more room – be satisfied and grateful. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll have more energy too.
