Page 1 of 2 With 2008 right around the corner, now is an exciting time of new beginnings. Clean calendars in a fresh year help us remember that every day is a new day. Many people make New Year’s resolutions with high hopes of changing their behavior for the better.
I like to establish goals for the New Year. Writing goals down helps to solidify them and create a plan to accomplish them. Now’s a great time to come apart from our everyday busy lives and write our goals for 2008. We are more likely to accomplish goals when we write them down. Consider adding these healthy eating goals to your list for 2008:
• Eat breakfast every day. Eat within one hour of waking up. This will help jump-start your metabolism for the day. • Eat regularly. Eat often throughout the day. Eating healthy meals and snacks at intervals of 2-4 hours will help stabilize your blood sugar and help prevent cravings and overeating. • Include high fiber foods to reach a goal of at least 25 grams per day for women and 35 grams per day for men. • Drink water throughout the day. Dehydration can occur even during the winter months. • Include fruits and vegetables with meals and snacks. Most people don’t eat enough of these nutrient dense foods. • Try new foods or familiar foods prepared in different ways. Don’t get stuck in a rut. With eating, variety is the spice of life. • Eat mindfully. Pay attention when you eat and you’ll eat less and enjoy your meals and snacks more. Eat until you’re satisfied or full; not until you're stuffed.
