Dan (my husband) and I have made a bet. But not with each other. With ourselves. We have proposed that for the month of January, we will be completely meat-free.

This isn't too hard of a challenge for me because I've obviously been weaning myself off for the last few months. In fact, chicken and turkey have pretty much been out of the question. I've eaten red meat from time to time though, a little bit because I wanted to but mostly because it was easier to say, "Sure, I'll have some" than "No thanks. I don't eat meat." But for Dan, this is something huge. He's the one who proudly ordered steak tartar (essentially raw meat on a plate) on our recent meat to Paris and has also chowed down on rabbit, kangaroo, and alligator. But surprisingly enough, this vegetarian challenge was all his idea. And I GLADLY jumped on the bandwagon.

Yesterday, I opened the door to our fridge and excitedly yelled to Dan, "Babe, come here. Our fridge looks so PRETTY!" And it does. It's piled high with gloriously colored fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and beans. I get happy just looking at it.

I'm sure we'll encounter some challenges along the way, one being a steak dinner with friends in a couple of weeks. Now, this place isn't the type of classy establishment that offers an array of vegetarian options. It's a greasy (semi-gross) restaurant that is all about their steak, and pretty much nothing else. At least they have awesome cole slaw and pickle appetizers...

Good for you and Dan!! As you know, I've been on the meat-free bandwagon for the past 4 months or so....for the most part, it has been ok, except for that last week I noticed that my hair was starting to get thin. In my typical dramatic fashion, I started to freak out and immediately went to the internet to look up what might be causing this. Stress, lack of protein, and hormonal balances are just some of the reasons that came up. I obviously can't blame the lack of meat right away, since I'm a canditate for all three, but I'm definitely trying to work some more protein (besides the eggs and soy) into my diet.

Definitely keep us posted on how it goes =)
