Page 1 of 2 Back in the early 1970s, I remember seeing Jack LaLanne on television, wearing his trademark body suit and a big smile. For those of you too young to remember Jack, he is widely known as the “Godfather of Fitness,” and he touted the benefits of exercise (or ‘calisthenics,’ as it was known in those days) back when such information was treated with suspicion, even by doctors. Says Jack on his Web site, “People thought I was a charlatan and a nut. The doctors were against me – they said that working out with weights would give people heart attacks and they would lose their sex drive.”
Long before Jane Fonda or Tae Bo exercise videos were all the rage, Jack was spreading the word about how exercise and nutrition could have a positive impact on health. And the proof is in the (low-fat) pudding: Jack turned 93 in 2007 and is still going strong. Exercise is not only useful for keeping those extra pounds from creeping up, it’s also great for your heart and mind. When it comes to exercise videos and fitness personalities, who do you admire? Which exercise DVDs do you use on a regular basis? In my next post, I’ll tell you about the great Pilates DVD that I’ve been using.
