This past week Patty, one of our dearest Café friends, lost her mother whom she had taken care of with loving grace and quiet devotion for many years. In the predawn darkness, I thought about Patty and all the devoted family caregivers who face such sorrow; and silently praised them for a job well done….
Tribute to CaregiversFor each caregiver had chosen to live as “a friend to man” and there is no greater tribute we can offer them than the words of poet Sam Walter Foss: “There are hermit souls that live withdrawn, In the peace of their self-content; There are souls, like stars, that dwell apart, In a fellowless firmament; There are pioneer souls that blaze their paths Where highways never ran; “But let me live by the side of the road And be a friend to man." A Friend to Man "I see from my house by the side of the road, By the side of the highway of life, The men who press with the ardor of hope, The men who are faint with the strife. But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears, Both part of an infinite plan; Let me live in my house by the side of the road And be a friend to man.” The House by the Side of the Road To Patty and all caregivers who choose to live by the side of the road, we offer our deepest gratitude and silent admiration..
