This past weekend, we gratefully remembered and honored our fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. Also, many enjoyed the fresh taste of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and kicked off the summer picnic season.
To me, there’s nothing like the fresh-off the-grill flavor of grilled meats and veggies. But what about hot dogs? A typical hot dog contains about 150 calories and 15 grams of fat. So are there healthier choices?
Fortunately, there are healthier choices at the market. I used to eat Healthy Choice all beef hot dogs, which contain 70 calories and 2.5 grams of fat. I loved these and still recommend these, but my local store has stopped carrying them. So now, I’m enjoying Hebrew National 97% fat free beef franks, which contain 45 calories each and 1.5 grams of fat. Keep in mind though that most hot dogs, even low fat hot dogs, contain a lot of salt so you don’t want to eat them too frequently. But, this picnic season, you can still enjoy hot dogs and control your calorie and fat intake by choosing low fat varieties, which contain 3 grams of fat or less per serving.
