Summer Activities for Burning CaloriesNow with summer quickly approaching, how many of us have good excuses for not getting outdoors and getting active?

Exercise pros say we should aim for 30 minutes of aerobic activity most days of the week and work our way up to 60 minutes a day.

We need to burn 3,500 calories just to lose one pound. Translation: those of us who weigh 170 pounds will have to jog at least seven hours in one swoop to lose just one pound.

So how many calories do we burn if we spend an hour engaging in physical activity?

Glad you asked. Throwijng a Frisbee for an hour will burn 201 calories if you weigh 140 pounds; 245 calories if you weigh 170.

Mopping up after guests leave your "Welcome Summer" party will burn 285 calories if you weigh about 140 pounds and 347 calories if you weigh 170 pounds.

Here are other summer activities with the number of calories burned in an hour:

Figures are based on moderate activity. A heavier person burns more calories, so the same amount of physical activity can actually burn the same number of calories more quickly. However, exercising harder and faster only increases the calories expended slightly. To burn more calories, we must exercise for a longer time.
