By Leigh Belanger | Nubella.com
Just like any other piece of popular culture, food follows trends based on consumer preference and marketing muscle. Remember oat bran, blueberries, and the more recent craze for pomegranates?
The public embraces and discards food, beverage, and diet trends in the same way we do fashion and film stars.
As 2007 unfolds and nutrition and food tastes in America continue to evolve, a new year will bring new trends for cooks, diners and dieters to explore.
Topics Covered:
In the kitchen
Socially responsible foods
On a diet?
In the restaurant
A healthy year

Drinking Tea For The Health Of It
Everybody drinks something everyday. What you choose and how much you choose to drink affects your diet and health.
In my private counseling, it’s not unusual for me to find clients drinking 500-1,000 calories daily from empty-calorie beverages, such as soda. That kind of liquid calorie intake can lead to one to two pounds of weight gained every week.

Avoiding Mercury in Fish
What is mercury?
Mercury is a metal found naturally in the environment. Farming, burning coal and using mercury in manufacturing, increase the mercury cycling through the air, water and soil.
In water, mercury changes its form and becomes methylmercury, which is then absorbed by fish. When you eat fish containing mercury, you absorb it, and at high levels it can be harmful. Mercury will leave the body over time in urine, feces and breast milk.
Do I need to avoid the mercury found in fish?

Aquaculture
One of the major food trends for 2007 is knowing where our food comes from. This includes fish.
As demand for low-calorie, high-protein fish rises, so does awareness of the health of our oceans and fish stocks. Over the past few years, aquaculture, also known as fish farming, has emerged as a way to meet demand for many fish species without depleting wild stocks.
Since it is a relatively new industry with very little regulation in place, aquaculture is also controversial. Fish are either farmed in pens in the ocean or in land-based tanks.
Tilapia, shellfish, and catfish are all thought to be among the best choices for farmed fish.
